Week of September 25, 2023

I recently visited with several students regarding spending more time working on IXL recommended skills to help improve their IXL levels. If your child was one I visited with, then we have agreed on a weekly schedule for IXL practice, which will begin the week of Sept. 25th. Please take a minute to visit with your child to see if they have an IXL practice schedule, and if so, encourage them to make sure they are getting their practice sessions in according to the practice schedule we have agreed upon. If you are wondering what IXL is…IXL uses insights, within the computer program, from student work in the curriculum and the Real-Time Diagnostic to generate personalized guidance for each learner. These personalized action plans seamlessly link students to the skills that will help them build on their knowledge and remediate gaps in understanding. Thank you in advance for your support.

MESSAGE REGARDING READING HOMEWORK

Now that we have made it through the first part of the school year, let me take a moment to be a bit more specific about reading homework expectations. Typically, on a full five day school week, they are responsible for 80 minutes outside of reading class. It is suggested they read at least 20 minutes Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; however, as long as they have the required minutes for the week, they have freedom in when they get their minutes.

Here are some examples of what their options are to get their minutes – finish incomplete work, complete corrections or redo assignments in which they may have not earned a passing grade (70+), work on IXL Language Arts recommended skills (highly recommended if their levels are below grade level), and/or read (preferably material on their reading level – students can use the 5 finger rule to determine if the material is on their level or not). Please understand that in order to stay on top of classroom responsibilities, students may exceed the minimum weekly minutes. Also, I have made it clear that my classroom is open every morning beginning at 7:30 for students to come in for help, to finish assignments, to do corrections, and/or to work on IXL. My goal for each student this year is to help them instill a sense of ownership and accountability in their education.

I am really enjoying this group and looking forward to a great school year. Thank you for sharing your child with me!
